A Journey of Learning

From 13–16 November 2025, two UEM Volunteers working in Germany had the unique opportunity to travel to Paris, France, for a three-day learning and cultural-exchange trip. Guided and supported by Anna Neumann, the visit was designed to broaden our perspectives, expose us to new experiences, and strengthen bonds within our volunteer team.
As part of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) South-North Volunteer Program, Jeremie Niyiguha and Emmanuel Nkurikiyumukiza are in team of four volunteers representing Rwanda in this year of 2025-2026 in an international volunteer group serving in Germany.
Our first impressions of Paris were seeing the Eiffel Towel and its maintained gardens, where we enjoyed wide views of the city and learned about the monument’s historical significance. We mostly used to read about this towel in books and it was our first time to see it with our eyes.
While walking along the Champs-Élysées, we were struck by the elegance and luxury that define this world-famous avenue. Surrounded by high-end shops, luxurious cars, designer clothes, and expensive watches, it was easy to admire but also realize that many of these things were far beyond our reach. In the evening, we strolled near iconic landmarks such as the Louvre Museum, the Notre-Dame Cathedral, and along the Seine River with its islands. Although we didn’t explore them in depth, seeing them lightly at night gave us a special glimpse into Paris’s rich history and charm.
These visits were not just sightseeing moments—they were opportunities to learn, ask questions, observe new cultures, and gain inspiration from the city’s artistic and historical depth.
On our final day, we attended the Sunday service at the Église Protestante de Paris. The warm atmosphere, the congregation’s hospitality, and the unique style of worship gave us a new understanding of Christian practices in France.
One of the most memorable moments was witnessing a baptism ceremony. After the baptism, the newly baptised member walked through the church with the pastor raised their hands in blessing, symbolizing a joyful welcome into the Christian community. This tradition was completely new to us, and it deeply impressed everyone on the team. It reminded us of the rich diversity of worship practices across cultures and the importance of embracing differences with curiosity and respect.
The trip was more than a visit it also a meaningful opportunity to grow and learn. As volunteers from Rwanda, exploring a new country broadened our worldview and strengthened our commitment to learning from others. We returned to Germany with new insights, renewed motivation, and unforgettable memories. Our three days in Paris left us inspired, reflective, and enriched. As UEM volunteers from Rwanda, we returned to Germany with new knowledge, strengthened friendships, and memories that will continue shaping our volunteer journey.
Gratitude to Anna Neumann, for her planning, guidance, and continuous support and also to the Foyer le pont hotel in Paris that hosted us, for their warm hospitality and comfortable accommodation.
